We are looking to find a skilled Accent, Dialect and Phonological Variation Annotator to join our growing team.
You will identify and annotate accents, dialectal features and phonological variation in speech. These annotations support models that learn regional and social variation in spoken language.
Responsibilities:
Listen to speech recordings and assign accent or dialect labels using a predefined taxonomy
Annotate key phonological features including vowel quality, consonant substitutions, syllable timing and intonation patterns
Flag code-switching or mixing of varieties within the same utterance
Provide short notes explaining features that informed classification in ambiguous cases
Maintain high consistency across clips for similar varieties
Requirements:
Working knowledge of phonetics and phonology
Ability to distinguish major English accents and at least one additional language family or region
Familiarity with annotation tools for attaching labels and notes to audio segments
Background:
Sociolinguistics, dialectology, phonetics or related fields
Experience working with multilingual communities, language teaching or linguistic research
Sample Test Task:
Given five short speech clips, assign an accent label to each, list key phonological cues and briefly justify the classification.
Application Requirements:
Short note describing one accent or dialect you know well and how you recognise it
Optional past work in linguistics, language teaching or research
Completed test task
Compensation
Per clip labelled or per hour of audio processed, depending on project structure.
