(Pragmatics and Voice Analysis)

We are looking to find a skilled Emotional Subtext Annotation Specialist to join our growing team.

You will identify and annotate sarcasm, irony, understatement and subtext in spoken language. These annotations support models that detect non-literal meaning and pragmatic cues.

Responsibilities:

• Listen to speech clips and tag utterances that contain sarcasm, irony, understatement or mismatch between literal content and tone

• Provide short notes describing the cues that signalled non-literal meaning, including context and vocal delivery

• Distinguish playful sarcasm from more hostile or cutting forms using the defined categories

• Label cases where irony is uncertain and record the level of ambiguity

• Apply consistent pragmatic judgement across speakers, settings and language varieties

Requirements:

• Strong grasp of pragmatic meaning, humour and tonal nuance

• Ability to integrate contextual information and vocal cues

• Comfort writing brief explanations of reasoning behind labels

Background:

•  Linguistics, literature, scriptwriting, stand-up, social research or any work involving analysis of implied meaning

•  Experience consuming or analysing media where sarcasm and subtext are common

Sample Test Task:

• Given twelve short speech clips, identify which ones contain sarcasm or irony, provide a brief explanation and rate how obvious the non-literal meaning is.

Application Requirements:

• Short note explaining how you personally recognise sarcasm in everyday conversation

• Optional examples of prior analytical work involving tone or subtext

• Completion of the test task

Compensation
